GE rolls out WattStation and WattStation Connect for charging EVs

Image

GE spent the second half of 2011 teasing its WattStation solution for powering electric vehicles. Now that the company has captured your attention with that slick, Yves Behar-designed "pedestal," it's ready to deliver. In case you forgot, the WattStation Connect is a charging station / software platform developed in cooperation with Hertz that lets EV owners manage the power-up process remotely via a mobile app and the WattStation's three connectivity options: 3G, Wi-Fi and Ethernet. The app, expected to hit iOS and Android in the coming weeks, also help users locate stations and lets them virtually pay for juicing up their vehicles. While the charging platform will work its way into the hearts and homes of those who own an EV, GE will also deploy this tech to retailers and fleet owners looking to zero in on their electricity usage. It's not yet clear where the WattStations will be or are already available, but GE is apparently ready to start the rollout now. Get the full details in the presser after the break.

BlackBerry Playbook joins the Angry Birds Space bandwagon

Image

To the surprise of no one, Angry Birds Space has ballooned into a casual gaming phenomenon -- a feat that Rovio has somehow managed without the aid of a BlackBerry PlayBook audience. RIM announced today, however, that fans of its deeply discounted tablet can now hop on board the train to space pig payback, for the low, low price of $3, that is, unless you're saving up for that 4G version we've been hearing about...

Jennifer Hudson says always disliked man accused of killing her family

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Grammy and Oscar winning singer and actress Jennifer Hudson testified on Monday that she had known the man charged with killing three members of her family since they were in middle school together but never liked him.

Hudson was the first witness called at the start of the murder trial of William Balfour, who is charged with shooting dead her mother Darnell Donerson, 57, her brother Jason Hudson, 29, and her nephew Julian King, 7.

Balfour, married to Hudson's sister Julia Hudson, did not treat Julia or her son, Julian, well, Hudson testified. "I would tell her (Julia) over and over again not to marry William," she said.

Hudson testified about the harrowing day of October 24, 2008, when she learned that her mother and brother were dead and her nephew was missing. She flew home to Chicago and identified her mother and brother's bodies at the morgue. On October 27, she was back at the morgue to identify her nephew's body.

Before Hudson moved out in the summer of 2006, the family had lived together in the same house in Chicago where the bodies of her mother and brother were found. Julian King's body was found in a white SUV that Jennifer Hudson had bought for her brother Jason.

Prosecutors say Balfour stole the vehicle, killed Julian in the back seat, and then abandoned it. The murder weapon, a handgun which had been stolen from Jason Hudson, was found in a vacant lot near the SUV, according to prosecutors.

In opening arguments at the trial, Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Veryl Gambino described Balfour as a jealous and vindictive man who repeatedly threatened to kill Julia Hudson and her family.

"These weren't just words. They weren't just threats. They were deadly warnings of what was to come," Gambino said.

Jennifer Hudson burst onto the music scene in 2004 when she performed on the television singing contest "American Idol". She subsequently won a Grammy for her debut album, and an Academy Award for her role in the movie "Dreamgirls."

DEFENSE RAISES DRUG ALLEGATION

Cook County assistant public defender Amy Thompson said during her opening statement that Balfour's DNA was not found on the murder weapon, or inside the SUV where Julian King's body was found. She said the Chicago Police knew the media would "explode" about the case because of the link to Jennifer Hudson, and in their haste got the wrong man.

Thompson told the jury that Jason Hudson was a drug dealer and had been shot twice previously, causing him to lose part of his left leg.

The police "did nothing to determine if it might have been Jason Hudson's violent business that led to him getting shot twice before, that led to these murders," Thompson said. She also noted that the Hudson family lived in Englewood - "probably the most dangerous neighborhood in Chicago."

Asked during cross-examination if she knew what her brother did for a living, Jennifer Hudson said, "I don't really know."

Julia Hudson married Balfour in December 2006 - without telling Jennifer or Jason Hudson or their mother. The couple went to live at the Hudson family house.

Julia Hudson testified on Monday that her husband became jealous when she got gifts from other people, and was jealous even of her son, telling Julian not to kiss her. His nickname for Julian, a second grader getting straight A's in school, was "the little monster," she said.

She separated from William Balfour in February 2008, Julia Hudson said, and three months later he begged her to come back. When she said she could not, Balfour said he would kill her family, she testified.

"If you leave me, you'll be the last to die," Julia Hudson said Balfour told her. "I'm going to kill your family first."

The day before the murders had been Julia's birthday, and prosecutors said Balfour had been enraged at seeing at the house balloons bought by another man for Julia.

The trial has brought a swarm of national media to the historic Cook County criminal courthouse.

Polar bears emerged far earlier than thought, DNA study indicates (+video)

Polar bears were previously thought to have split from brown bears some 150,000 years ago. But a study of the bears' mitochondrial DNA indicates that they became a distinct species about 600,000 years ago.?

Polar bears have been chilling on the ice far longer than is generally thought, new research suggests, and they probably interbred with brown bears at one point after the two species separated.

Skip to next paragraph Flocke the baby polar bear in this video was taught to crawl by the zookeepers at Nuremberg Zoo.

The new German study contradicts data from a study published last July in the journal Current Biology that suggested polar bears?separated from brown bears?150,000 years ago. The new study analyzed the bears' mitochondrial DNA, a special "additional genome" that lives in the cell's energy factories and is passed down only from the mother. The new study concludes that the bears became separate species closer to 600,000 years ago.

If the polar bears were only 150,000 years old, as suggested by the previous study, they would have had to evolve many specialized traits in a curiously brief time, the German researchers said.

"I've been long puzzled by the suggestion that the polar bears would have been such a miraculous and rapidly evolving species," Frank Hailer of the Senckenberg Nature Research Society in Frankfurt told LiveScience. "I had this lingering question: Is it really true?"

Nuclear problem solver

Hailer and his colleagues looked at the polar bear's nuclear DNA, which comes from both parents and is much larger than the mitochondrial genome. [Fun Facts About Polar Bears]

They compared 9,000 base-pair sequences (the chemicals that make up the "rungs" of DNA's ladderlike molecule) from the nuclear DNA of 45 polar, brown and black bears. This comparison let the researchers build a family tree, with the idea that the greater the genetic differences between the species, the farther they were apart in evolutionary time. They were able to estimate when the polar bears and brown bears separated.

"We found that polar bears are much older than we previously knew from other studies; their appearance dated to about 600,000 years ago," Hailer said. "That would make sense around that time for something like a?polar bear to evolve, because Arctic habitats were much larger than they are today, so there would have been much larger habitats that would have been suitable for a species like a polar bear."

Adapting to environment

The researchers say the mitochondrial DNA data could have come from a hybridization event between polar and brown bears 150,000 years ago during the last warm interglacial period. During that time, sea ice melted and polar bears took to the shores, where they came into?contact with brown bears.

The researchers say this hybridization (similar to the hybrid "grolar" or "pizzly" bears seen in recent years in Canada) would have introduced the brown bear mitochondrial DNA into the polar bear population. If the DNA from the brown bears helped the polar bears survive the warm period, it's possible it could have easily spread throughout the population.

It seems "the polar bear population at the time they?hybridized with brown bears?was very small," Hailer said. "The impact of hybridization was very large, so the piece of mitochondrial DNA that came from brown bears to polar bears replaced all the original polar bear mitochondrial DNA."

This study appears in the April 20 issue of the journal Science.

Bee Gees member Robin Gibb shocked his doctors over the weekend when he emerged from a weeklong coma. The 62-year-old disco icon lapsed into a coma after contracting pneumonia during his battle with cancer.

According to BBC News, a family spokesperson said Gibb, 62, was able to nod and communicate with the members of his family who've held a vigil in his London hospital room. Gibb has been battling colon and liver cancer and in February he said he'd made a "spectacular" recovery from the disease, but was soon back in the hospital for surgery.

The "Saturday Night Fever" singer had bowel surgery 18 months ago for an unrelated condition, at which time doctors discovered a tumor and diagnosed him with colon cancer. It appeared as if the cancer was in remission as recently as last month.

Weakened from chemotherapy and two operations, Gibb lapsed into the coma last week after contracting pneumonia. Dr. Andrew Thillainayagam said on Friday that he had warned the singer's family that Robin might not wake up. In a statement, Thillainayagam said Gibb remains in intensive care and is, "exhausted, extremely weak and malnourished." He's breathing with the help of an oxygen mask and needs intravenous feeding and antibiotics.

He added, "It is testament to Robin's extraordinary courage, iron will and deep reserves of physical strength that he has overcome quite incredible odds to get where he is now." Wife Dwina, and sons Robin-John and Spencer and daughter Melissa have been at Gibb's side talking to him and playing his favorite music.

MBTA and Masabi team up for first smartphone rail ticketing system in the US, launching in Boston this fall

MBTA and Masabi team up for first smartphone rail ticketing system in the US, launching in Boston this fall

In Boston this fall, you won't need to keep up with your train ticket anymore -- as long as you don't leave your smartphone at home. The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) and Masabi have joined forces to bring a rail ticketing to handheld devices via iPhone, Android and BlackBerry apps. Headquartered in London, Masabi has launched similar tech for transit companies in the UK, eliminating ticket lines for many smartphone-wielding passengers. Software will allow riders to purchase tickets and passes that are validated with a barcode scan by conductors equipped with mobile devices of their own. MBTA is looking to cut costs and provide added convenience with the new system instead of adding more ticketing kiosks to its stations. The aforementioned apps will be developed alongside focus groups and a small pilot group this summer with a full rollout to all MBTA customers expected to happen this fall. Looking for a bit more info? Hit the coverage and source links below to read on.
