United Methodist Church celebrates centennial by opening cornerstone

MURPHYSBORO, IL (KFVS) -?The United Methodist Church of Murphysboro will be celebrating the building?s centennial on Monday, July 9 at 8 a.m.

As part of the celebration church members will be opening the cornerstone that was laid into place in 1912.

?

The church is much older than the structure. Parishioners originally held services as early as August of 1825 prior to the existence of Murphysboro in the nearby community of Brownsville.

After fire destroyed Brownsville the town was relocated on the Logan farm property and renamed ?Murphysboro.? The Methodist Church moved and for many years the congregation worshiped in a red brick building facing east on 15th Street at the rear of the present building. In 1912-1913, the present building was constructed of native sandstone at a cost of $62,000.

The United Methodist Church of Murphysboro is located at 1500 Pine Street, at the corner of 15th?Street and Pine in Murphysboro.
